To the Daily Mercury Editor: for your Letters page please.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE MAYOR

Cr Comerford, I have read your stated position with regard to compulsory fluoridation of Mackay. All I can say is that your disregard for the health (and freedom of choice for your citizens to choose their own medication) defies belief. Best interest of the community? Surely you are joking? You really need to properly inform yourself as to the hazardous nature of water fluoridation and the undeniable fact that there is absolutely NO evidence of absence of harm to those consuming it. All we have are statements that no evidence of harm has been found. Nobody has looked! I personally know people who can not tolerate fluoridated water as it makes them ill and causes all kinds of distress, but we can’t find any clinic or hospital in Victoria that will test them so that this can be scientifically determined. The only reliable conclusion to be drawn from this is that the fluoride lobby (well-entrenched in State Health Departments and the dental and medical lobby groups) don’t want this to be proven (or disproven, for that matter).

Please examine the evidence for yourself. The mere fact that there are reasonable grounds to suspect harm should provide the justification for ceasing fluoridation until the facts are scientifically determined. Just remember DDT, thalidomide, asbestos and the like, which were similarly thought harmless until many people were permanently maimed and condemned to chronic illness or death. The whistle-blowers in these instances were called names, mocked and ignored until the results were proven beyond doubt, just as anti-fluoride people are today.

Your ratepayers deserve to be respected, not compulsorily medicated.
